Aden Ras Morbet Clinic - March 14 - 19 2009

The Aden surgery camp was held at the Ras Morbat Christchurch clinic from the 14^th to the 19th of March. Thirty four patients were registered for different plastic surgery problems. Twenty patients were successfully operated.
 

The local clinic team looked after all the preoperative and postoperative cases without any difficulty. All the patients recovered well after the surgeries and are now being followed up at the clinic.

The halothane vaporizer in the theatre was jammed because it had not been used for over a year; a local clinic allowed the team to use their vaporizer for all the major operations.

Types of surgeries carried out at this camp:

• Frontalis muscle sling for paralytic ptosis of the eye in two patients
• Aesthetic septo rhinoplasty for the severely crooked nose
• Nasal Osteotomy for a deviated nose with nasal bone deformity
• Repair of septal dislocation and septal fracture
• Reduction of nasal cartilages and septal deformities in several patients
• Burns scars treatment with local flaps
• Revision cleft lip surgeries for poorly repaired cleft lips
• Aesthetic conchal cartilage graft repair of a nasal defect following trauma
• Removal of a benign tongue growth
• successful emergency treatment of a large acute traumatic inflammation of the soft palate uvula; with air entrapment in the uvula using syringe aspiration, multiple punctures and iv steroids. The patient recovered well after the treatment and the uvula returned to a normal size.

Needs: A new halothane vaporizer for the Ras Morbat anesthesia machine; the approximate cost is about 1200 to 1500 US dollars.
