Aden Camp, 17 – 19 January 2007

Dr Bona Lotha carried out 10 operations on children at the Ras Morbat Clinic, attached to Christ Church, Aden. The cases ranged from clefts to burns and a silicon implant for a deformed nose.

Altogether Dr Bona screened about 30 patients but not all were fit for surgery – two babies had illnesses requiring medication, and some had not been fasting, so their operations had to be cancelled. The Ras Morbat clinic has only four beds and only one nurse and needed completely fitting out. Some patients were carried from the theatre as there were no trolleys!

The bulk of the medical equipment for the Aden camp was generously provided by Halliburton and transported from Sana’a to Aden under the supervision of Trish Gifford. This equipment, together with other hi-tech medical items donated to Yemen Smile in 2005 by DNO, were left at the Aden clinic for the future use of Yemen Smile.

It will also to help the clinic continue its eye surgery work for the poorest of the community in Aden. Yemen Smile also donated medicines and anesthesia items to the clinic.

Mike Gifford, the British Ambassador, said, ‘Yemen Smile’s work at the Aden clinic has been a pioneering project for us, which could not have been completed without the hard work of many volunteers and the generosity of our donors.  The good news is the medical equipment donated will be re-used in future camps in Aden.

Thanks are due to our commercial sponsors, to Dr Bona, the Rev Peter and Nancy Crooks, Jeanette and William, Dr Ton, Geoke, Dr.Rana, Dr Wahid and Trish for all their hard work.’
