Hadramout Camp, November 2007

The November plastic surgery charity programmes were held at the Ibn Sina hospital Mukalla and Hadibo hospital Socotra.

A total of 17 patients were seen at Mukalla from the 6-8 November and 6 were operated for deformed noses and cleft palates. All the patients did well post operatively. A few local surgeons attended the training sessions in the theatre.

The Hadibo hospital camp was held in Socotra from the 17th – 22nd November. A total of 50 patients were seen with cleft lip and palate, severe burns and various deformities of the face and body requiring plastic surgery.

Two local surgeons were trained in plastic surgery treatment of burns and clefts. Altogether, twenty patients were operated successfully in the period. This time the major demonstrations were on the correction of burn contractures of the hands and fingers, and facial plastic surgery deformities.

A medium sized steam autoclave, a skin graft set and some medical items were donated by Yemen Smile to the hospital surgery.

Some of the surgeons who attended the plastic surgery camp were given copies of the Yemen Smile cleft surgery manual for beginners.

Special thanks to the individuals and companies in Sana’a who sponsored the programme. The local staff of  Mukalla and Socotra hospital were very actively involved in the programme and took good post operative care of all the patients.

The next follow up camp will be held in March 2008 since there are quite a few patients on the waiting list for surgery.
