Mukalla Cleft Workshop, December 2009

A two and a half day cleft workshop was
conducted at the Ibn Sina hospital where a surgery team headed by
Dr. Khalid Moharieg, general surgeon, was taught about cleft lip
and palate management .

Over 15 patients were registered and nine surgeries were
demonstrated in cleft lip and palate surgery using our charity’s
2009 advances. Dr. Khaild successfully did his first two cleft lip
surgeries (pic) under supervison. He also assisted in cleft palate
repairs and a difficult rhinoplasty for nasal atresia and columella
deformity. All the patients did well postoperatively.

Dr.Nazir taught some of the staff about cleft anesthetsia
methods and other safe techniques in anesthesia for children.The Ibn Sina
staff did an excellent job in patient care.

The next camp will take place sometime in March
2010. Special thanks to Dr.Moharieg and Dr.Asam the Director in
charge of the theatre and the Medical Director of the hospital and
staff for their support for the Yemeni cleft children of Hadramout.
A proposal was given to this hospital team to invite cleft patients
from across all the Hadramout governorates- Al Mahra, Shabwa and
Seiyun .

A request for much needed operation theatre equipment for this
unit was submitted to the US embassy' Sana medical support group
Heiva Kelly, Travis and Richard. The team is looking at the
possibility of supporting three units where the charity regularly helps cleft children - Socotra, Jibla hospital and Ibn Sina Mukalla
