Sana`a Camp, 18 – 19 August 2009

A two day consultation and surgery camp was conducted at the Hadda hospital in Sana'a for five cleft lip and palate children from the remote village of Hais in the Hodeidah region. It took several hours for the children to reach Sana'a by road. All the five children, whose ages ranged from three months to 12 years, were medically fit for the surgeries which were successfully performed over the two day period. The remaining 6-7 cleft children will be brought to Sana'a after the Ramadan season next month.

There are many poor cleft lip and palate children in the remote regions of Hodeidah and many of them have no access to plastic surgery services in the region.

A special arrangement was made for joint sponsorships of these cleft children with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency which helps the poor people of the area in different ways.

The children of Hais can now be brought to Sana'a for the cleft surgeries every two or three months. The charity medical workers included doctor Ton Konigsveld from the Worldwide Services, Holland, anesthetist Wahid Nazir from Aden, nurse Abdul Latif from Sana'a and theatre nurse Ameena from Dagestan, Russia.  Dr.Bona Lotha demonstrated some newer and improved methods of cleft lip and palate repair.

Special thanks to the US embassy staff and friends for providing the funds for this special arrangement for the cleft children of Hodeidah who can now come to Sana'a on a regular basis for cleft surgery.
