Taiz Camp, 19 – 21 October 2008

A cleft and craniofacial camp was conducted at the Taiz Karama hospital.  Dr.Yasser Hameed from Baghdad, Dr.Mohammed Khan from Uzbekistan and Dr. Brendan from Chicago helped with the planning and support of the cleft and craniofacial patients who came to Taiz from far away villages.

Twenty nine cleft and craniofacial patients were screened during the two and a half day consultation. Some of the patients had very severe craniofacial defects (fibrous dysplasia, Hemifacial microsomia, jaw defects, multiple clefts)  and would require more advanced care later .Twelve cleft lip patients were successfully operated upon by the Yemen Smile charity team.

A severely deformed patient with craniofacial clefts was also treated successfully (pic). In addition, several other plastic surgery patients received free consultations.

Some of the patients were advised to come back for the next camp which would be held sometime in February 2009.

From October 2008 onwards, more Yemeni local hospitals and surgeons will share the responsibility for  the cleft and reconstructive camps across the country. As a result many Yemeni patients can now visit the different smile units across the country and receive very low cost surgery for their problems.

Special thanks to the Director of Taiz Karama hospital and his staff for supporting the work of the cleft charity in many ways.
