Smiles across the Universe, August-November 2008

A short international reconstructive camp was conducted for Yemeni patients by the Yemen Smile Office along with a visiting volunteer ENT consultant, Dr.Jean Paul Roux from Marseilles, France. Dr.Paul’s visit was sponsored by the French Oil Company Total E&P in Yemen.

Over a three day period, 15 patients were screened for various ENT problems as well as cleft lip and palate. Six patients were operated upon successfully at the Jordanian clinic for cleft lip, nasal septum defects and one patient with an ear drum defect was operated by Dr.Roux at the German Clinic in Sana’a. The microsurgical correction was successful.

During this period, the charity also received 159 fine instruments from two British Plastic Surgeons in London, Dr.Dalia Nield of the London clinic and Mr. Tony Moss,ex Consultant Plastic Surgeon,St.Georges Tooting .Dr. Nield also donated an additional two years supply of Plastic Surgery journals from 2006-2007.Earlier,the Charity’s entire Plastic surgery library from 1978-2007 was donated by Dr.Nield.

Singaporean donors and well-wishers continue to support the charity in many different ways. In August, some of the major tertiary level Plastic Surgery Centres in Singapore helped the programme with much needed hi tech training. Special thanks to Vincent Yeow of the KK hospital Craniofacial Centre and other friends from Mount Elizabeth and Singapore General Hospital Plastic Surgery. A generous supply of over 47 silicon nasal implants was donated by Yeap Choong Lieng of Mount Elizabeth.

French supporters from Total E&P came forward with a very generous donation  for the safari smile programmes across the country. In addition, the company sponsors some training for local doctors in the Hadramout region and also sponsors the yearly visit of a French ENT micro surgeon for the local patients. We are thankful that the small charity had the largest number of accepted scientific papers (8) at the International Asian Pacific Craniofacial Conference in Taipei this year, which was attended by delegates from all over the world.

Thanks also to Colin Kramer and his team at DNO Norway/Sana’a,  for allowing the charity to use a section of the office for charity accounts. Many other donors have come forward this year and the charity would like to thank all individual and corporate donors for making this smile programme a sustainable project for the benefit of Yemeni patients.
